DESCRIPTION – Amsterdam: Sluishuis, Sportheldenbuurt and Sluisbuurt
Behind the Eastern Docklands Amsterdam extended more eastwards in the last 15 years with the building of Sluishuis, Sportheldenbuurt and Sluisbuurt.
At the entrance of the new made IJburg-islands the Sluishuis (2022) forms a brand new icon. This energy neutral building designed by Danish architects BIG in collaboration with Dutch firm Barcode is facilitated with a public route and a harbour. We’ll climb the building and experience the great view over the surrounding. With 442 dwellings, the complex embraces an inner harbor to which boats can access through a cantilever. Above the first floor, the volumes are clad in aluminum to reflect the surrounding water, while the terraced drop has a wooden skin.
The Sportheldenbuurt is a unique children friendly and healthy neigbourhood built around an impressive skate track and a sportsfield. This is is the first residential neighborhood on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam East with 2,500 homes, schools, sports facilities and other amenities. Special attention was paid to balconies and terraces. The urban sports area, with a large skateboard area as the most spectacular element, and three remodeled silos are the main points of attention. The continuity of the public space reinforces the cohesion between the different buildings.
The Sluisbuurt is currently under construction. It will be a sustainable, green neighborhood located by the water and close to the city center. In 2010 there were few homes (23 regular homes and 570 student homes). Eventually there will be 5,500 homes in a mix of low and high buildings. In 2024 it is expected that the first residents and business owners to move into the neighborhood. Development will take place in phases and the neighborhood should be ready within 10 to 15 years. It is controversial because it will contain some towers of 140 meters, the tallest buildings of Amsterdam.The neighborhood is expected to be fully completed by 2035.
