DESCRIPTION – San Francisco: Financial District
The Financial District and SOMA (South Of Market) are the two most vibrant and commercial neighborhoods in the City.
Join our guided tour as we visit the iconic Transamerica Pyramid by William Pereira, V.C. Morris Gift Shop designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, nowadays home to fashion brand ISAIAH, it is the only building in the city designed by Wright. The walk from the Pyramid proceeds through downtown’s magnificent art deco masterpieces, and the important “Hallidie Building”, the very first “curtainwall” building in the world.
Completed in 1995, then with a massive addition in 2018, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (also known as SFMOMA) marks the first time Mario Botta or Snohetta have designed buildings in the United States and will also be part of this walking tour. The San Francisco Federal Building was completed in 2007 and is located in the SoMA area of San Francisco, designed by Morphosis. Designed to be a ‘green’ building, it consumes less than half the power of a standard office tower. The Crown Zellerbach building by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is an office skyscraper rising on San Francisco’s Market Street which we also will see during the walking tour.
Boarding the historic “F” line streetcar, we will head all the way back down Market Street to the Ferry Building, one of the buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake. It’s a lovely piece of Beaux Arts turn of the 19th Century architecture.
