Duration: 4 hours
DESCRIPTION – Glasgow: Bank of the River Clyde
This architecture tour guided by an architect in Glasgow will allow us to see the reforms along the north and south shores of the Bank of the River Clyde. This former industrial zone has been transformed into a new entertainment zone and on a very pleasant walk we can see the evolution of the city.
These changes have brought new buildings that we will discover during the tour, like the SECC by Norman Foster and Partners (or Clyde Auditorium, known as “Armadillo”). Right next-door, Hydro, by the same studio of architects, is almost finished and will be a pavilion for sports and events. Crossing the river, we will see the Glasgow Science building and the Centre Planetarium by BDP Architects. On this side of the shore, we will also see the headquarters of BBC Scotland by architect David Chipperfield and various modern apartments in one of the best zones in the city.
An important stop will be the Riverside Museum (transport museum) by architect Zaha Hadid, which stands out for its wave shape. The museum features steam machines and other examples and of the remains of the Industrial Revolution era. Apart from its content, the museum itself is a work of art, connected to the river, a part of the essence of the city’s relationship to this river channel.
We will finish the tour in the Maggie’s Gartnavel Cancer Centre by OMA- Rem Koolhaas and the nearby Icon building by Elder and Cannon.
