BILBAO – OLD BILBAO AND CITY CENTER

DESCRIPTION – Bilbao: Old Bilbao and City Center

We will visit the Old Town of Bilbao, best known as ”Casco Viejo”: Unamuno, Santiago and Nueva (s. XIII-s.XIX) Squares. Arenal Pont, Arriaga Theatre (Joaquín de Rucoba), Kiosko Arenal and Train Station to Santander (FEVE -“La Concordia”). Throughout the nineteenth century and beginnings of the twentieth, Bilbao experienced heavy industrialisation which made it the center of the second-most industrialised region of the country.

The area includes Bilbao Underground Station, Casco Viejo Station by Norman Foster, San Nicolás Church and Jardines de Albia (gardens). We will learn more about the Urbanism of the city center visiting Gran Via street, Moyua, Indautxu and Bizkaia squares.

After a short walk, you’ll be able to see in the zone of the “Ensanche” newer and well worth seeing buildings as the local government’s library (Vizcaya Foral Library by IMB), the Cultural Center “La Alhóndiga” by Philippe Starck and the Sanitary headquarters by Coll- Barreu arquitectos.
