DESCRIPTION – Mexico City: University (UNAM)

Mexico City is full of examples of architecture from all periods. One of our most interesting guided tours is the one that takes us through the central campus of the National University of Mexico (UNAM), declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. The organization considers the university to be one of the most important icons of architecture and modern urban planning in Latin America. More than 70 architects, artists and engineers participated in the project, achieving a complex that encompasses part of the most important architectural trends of the 20th century.

The National University of Mexico includes the city university complex (Mario Pani), the Olympic Stadium, the Central Library by Juan OʼGorman, and the Faculties of Architecture, Engineering and Social Sciences. The sculptural space, the Rectory Tower (with murals by Siqueiros) and the University Museum of Contemporary Art are also interesting to see. The architectural project for the museum was led by Mexican architect Teodoro González de León and was completed 2008, being the first building to conclude the University Cultural Centre master plan. The museum is located on one side of a new plaza that serves as the entrance to the University Cultural Centre. Its facade, with a 45-degree incline, forms a porch that leads to the Concert Hall and the University Cultural Centre theatres.

On this tour guided by an architect, you will see first hand the university campus and its buildings, as well as participate in current university life.
