The monumental colonial capital of India
New Delhi is undoubtedly a very modern monumental city founded in 1911 and designed by English architects to be the capital of India. The city was thought as a symbol of British power and supremacy and its urbanism shows it. With its great avenues and spaces is a great example of planned colonial architecture.
The city was designed by the British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker based on the Palladian architecture, although also has influences of the Indian architecture. Highlights include buildings such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan at the top of Raisina Hill, residence of the country’s President, the Parliament, its avenues Rajpath and Sansad Marg. All this makes New Delhi a truly spectacular city very interesting for those interested in urban planning and planned architecture that will not leave anyone indifferent.
