DESCRIPTION – Medellín: Civic and Sports Tour
Important decisions have been taken during the last years in Medellin to turn the city in an important referent of urbanism and civic development. The projects for the adaptation of public spaces have contributed to return the city to the community, and improve the integration and equity. In the civic and sports tours, we will recognize some of these places where many important city plans were created, and we will be able to enjoy the experience of public life that gives way to the citizen culture, coexistence and civility of Medellín.
The tour begins in the administrative center La Alpujarra, where the buildings of the Mayor’s Office, the Council of Medellin, the Government, and the Assembly of Antioquia converge. In this area we also recognize the famous sculpture “Monumento a la raza” by Rodrigo Arenas Betancur, the civic center Lights Park by the architect Juan Manuel Peláez, and the Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM) Library by the architect Juan Felipe Uribe de Bedout. The route continue with the cultural and civic center “Plaza de la libertad” (liberty square) by OPUS and Toroposada Architects, and the TeleAntioquia Building, thestudio of a regional TV channel. We are also visiting the “Intelligent Building of EPM”, by the architect Carlos Julio Calle; the “Barefoot Park”, a zen-inspired public park designed by the architect Felipe Uribe de Bedout; the EPM Water Museum, an interactive museum dedicated to educating people how important water is to the planet; Plaza Mayor Convention and Exhibition Center; and Medellín Metropolitan Theatre.To finalize the tour we have the option to add the Atanasio Girardot Sports Complex, a coliseum with five sport arenas designed by Giancarlo Mazzanti and Plan B Architects; and the Aquatic Center by Luis Callejas, Edgar Mazo and Sebastián Mejía.
