DESCRIPTION – Madrid: Center and Museums
Madrid can be known from many angles but one essential is its museums. The museums axis that runs from the city center includes galleries as famous as the Prado Museum or the Reina Sofia. The most interesting thing from the point of view of the architecture is to discover how the new extensions have been merged with the classical buildings.
We will begin the tour at the Estación de Atocha and then walk to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, rebuilt by the architect Jean Nouvel. From MNCARS we will head to Caixa Forum (Herzog & De Meuron), Thyssen and Prado museums.
One of the more “off-center” projects most worth to visit, is the old Slaughterhouse, “Matadero Madrid”, which is now a cultural center. Matadero is located in the Arganzuela district of Madrid’s Legazpi quarter, close to the River Manzanares, which forms a natural barrier dividing the center from the south of the city. The project was commissioned by the Madrid City Council to its architect Luis Bellido.
