DESCRIPTION – Lyon: Confluence Phase 2 – WWF Zero Carbon
The second phase of the new Confluence Urbain Project in Lyon is being constructed on 40 hectares of land near the tip of the peninsula which divides the Rhone and the Soane Rivers. The two phases together will total 1 million square meters of construction.
The second phase will be certified “WWF Plan for Sustainable Building “with “Zero Carbon”, where the production of energy will compensate the consommation of energy. Innovative Planning, Social, Architectural, Sustainable Building, and Landscaping principles are being implemented in this ambitious project whose goal is to demonstrate a new way to make a city.
Herzog and De Meuron from Bale, the Master Planners for the Second Phase as well as Jean Nouvel have constructed respectively 15 and 17 story apartment towers. Manuel Herz from Bale, Tatiana Bilbao from Mexico, and Christian Kerez from Zurich have also realized housing projects which possess an innovative “Intelligent Building” technology where the energy of each apartment will automatically learn to adapt itself to the life patterns of its inhabitants.
The new School of Architecture and Urban Srategies designed, founded and directed by the Parisien architect Odile Decq is in its first year of operation. The project also includes a seven story student residence designed by Odile Decq.
Other projects will be realised by architects such as David Chipperfeld, Diener and Diener with Clément Vergely, Mahuel Aires Mateus, as well as the Atelier Vera.
