DESCRIPTION – Lyon: Confluence Phase 1

Highly orchestrated, ambitious and innovative, the Confluence project now forms the southern entrance to the 2nd most important city of France.  Conceived on the 77 hectares of the southern tip of the peninsula between the Rhone and the Soane Rivers, the project will have produced by 2025 more than 1,000,000m2 of construction or regeneration of existing  portuary and market buildings,  attracted 1100 entrprises, created 25,000 jobs and has been chosen as place to live  by 17,000 inhabitants.

Gained on marshland by landfill during the 19th century, the fomer port is finally rediscovering its original natural aquatic state. The quality of the landscape projects reveals the exceptionnal and unique quality ot the site.

The evident success of the project, permits the Urban Planning Agency to dictate to promoteurs the typology of the program, the quality of the architecture and of the surrounding public spaces.  Many prestigious architectes and landscape architectes have been designated through many international competitions.

At the tip of the peninsula is the famous Confluence Museum by Coop Himmelblau who searched to defy gravity with their project.

Advancing towards the center several remarquable corporate headquarters compose the Soane riverbanks : GL Events by Odile DECQ, Aciès Consulting by Rudy RICIOTTIEuronews (The Green Cube) and the Orange Cube by JACOB and MACFARLANE, the Duty House by Jean-Michel WILMOTTE, and the PROGRES by  XANADU.

The “Exposition” of the Headquarters Buildings ends with the “Canal” and the “Port”, the central axe of the center of the Confluence Project. “The Leisure and Commercial Pole” with its inflated floating roof  by Jean-Paul VIGUIER,  structures the south bank of the Canal. . At the Canal’s entrance Kengo KUMA constructed the 1st European Energy Positive Project Mixed Housing/ Offices followed by the Monolith by MRVDV, ECDM, and Emmanuel Gautrand.

The project of “Lyon Islands” composes the north bank of the Canal with housing composed around an elevated garden versing towards the Soane River. You will discover projects by Massimilano FUKSAS, Clément VERGELY, Vincent AMATEO and Tanya CONCKA.
