DESCRIPTION – New York: Lower Manhattan – From WTC to Cooper Union
New York has two main concentrations of high-rise buildings: Midtown Manhattan and Lower Manhattan, each with its own uniquely recognizable skyline. Lower Manhattan is one of the largest central business districts in the United States and was characterized by the omnipresence of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center from its completion in 1973 until its destruction in the September 11 attacks, 2001.
In the first decade of the 21st century, Lower Manhattan saw rapid reconstruction to include the new One World Trade Center. The Downtown skyline received new designs from such architects as Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry. Goldman Sachs building is a 225 meter (750 feet) tall, 43 floors building across the street from the World Trade Center site.
In our walk from the new WTC 7 by SOM to Battery Park, we will walk along the famous Wall Street and will see the Beekman by Frank Gehry. Then we will follow through Little Italy to see the Blue Tower by Tschumi, Thor building by Marcel Wanders, the Mercer residences by Jean Nouvel, the Store for Art and Architecture by Steven Holl, the new Museum by SANAA, the new Prada store by OMA, the Alessi store by Asymptote, the University Plaza by I.M. Pei, the NY Department of Philosophy by Steven Holl and the new building for the Cooper Union by Morphosis.
