DESCRIPTION – Marseille: The radiant city of Le Corbusier
After years of study and reflection on collective housing, the project of the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille in 1952 finally gives the architect the opportunity to experiment and test their ideas in one of the emblematic works of the twentieth century architecture.
The vertical city of Le Corbusier, such as criticized as praised, served subsequently as a model for other projects of the same architect, but also of many other many colleagues concerned about the dignity of the housing for the working classes and their relationship spaces.
We will start the visit by the outside of the building, to understand its North-South implementation giving to the dwellings openings in both East and West facades, its structure on concrete pillars that free space at street level and we will discuss its facade.
We will also see its hall and the corridor on the third floor.
Finally, we will have access to the roof-terrace, conceived as a space for public use for all the inhabitants of the Unité.
