DESCRIPTION – Caracas: A Special District

Caracas is a city that was founded under the classic model of the colonial city, in 1567 by Diego de Losada. The arrangement, dictated by the laws of India, has been maintained, with its squares. Although there are few buildings that are preserved from the colonial period, during the visit we will visit some temples such as: the cathedral of Caracas, the temple of Altagracia and some parts of the old convent of San Francisco, the Palace of Academies today.

But, the urban and architectural heritage that is observed in the historic center of Caracas, belongs, in its majority, to the last third of the 19th century, the period in which Venezuela is inserted into the oil economy and the process of global modernization. It is at this time when the regulations are established and the basic buildings that change the appearance of certain streets, such as the Federal Legislative Palace, the Temple of the Holy Chapel, the Basilica of St. Theresa, the Municipal Theater and the Park El Calvario are erected, among others. The development project was that of a “tropical Paris”, the promise of living in the green, happy and fresh valley of Caracas, the belle époque of Paris.
