DESCRIPTION – Cape Town: Woodstock, Salt River & Observatory districts

This architecture tour will take us through Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory Districts in Cape Town. Historical, industrial and vibrant neighbourhoods on the path to gentrification.

It was the industrial epicentre of the city, due to its proximity, where the first Railway took place in Cape Town, making exchange in all purposes with a mixites population. Nowadays on the path of gentrification, we will see some factories which have been converted in mixed used purposes like the ‘Old Biscuit Mill’ in Woodstock district, and new housing programs are recently developed.

In Salt River district we can see the Zip Zap Circus School (Tsai Desgin Studio, 2017). Since1992, theyprovided free training to children and young people using circus arts and performance as a tool for social change and community empowerment. This new design embodies three different architectural typologies to meet spatial requirements: Circus, theater and school.

In Observatory district we’ll be able to see an old cinema, Bijou, and Art deco building. It is home now of a creative blacksmith artist (Conrad Hicks) and other workshop. A trendy area with beautiful street Arts.
