CAPE TOWN – SILO DISTRICT

DESCRIPTION – Cape Town: Silo District

This architecture tour in Cape Town will take us through Silo District, located in the harbor between the docks and the cruise terminal, the Silo district is both a monument to sophisticated contemporary art and a monument to the reuse of history and industrial heritage.

Originally built in 1921, the old towering grain elevator complex accounted for much of the port’s production. Today, these industrial giants have been reconfigured to house contemporary African art, style and sophisticated chic. With dining, design, shopping, arts and leisure, the complex offers a wide range to attract enthusiasts.

In this walking tour we’ll see the Zeitz MOCAA – Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Heatherwick Studio, 2017). The museum is housed in 9,500 square meters of custom-designed space across nine floors, carved out of the monumental structure of the historic Grain Elevator Complex. Disused since 1990, the silo stands as a monument to Cape Town’s industrial history, once the tallest building in South Africa.

We’ll then see the Halle ‘WATERSHED”, a vibrant local craft and design space filled with fresh fashion, art and taste.

Then we’ll go to the Guild Gallery (Arts & Designers), founded in 2008 and pioneered the functional art and collectible design categories on the African continent, guiding its artists and designers to create original works of global relevance.

We’ll end the tour going up the roof top of The Silo Hotel (Heatherwick Studio, 2017) a luxury 5 start hotel, to enjoy a drink with a view.
