DESCRIPTION – Medellín: Botanical Garden and its surroundings

This area is characterized by the environmental quality provided by the vegetation and lakes of the Botanical Garden and the North Park; for the processes of integral improvement of the Moravia Neighborhood and the urban renewal that have been taken place in the sector as of 2004, which gave it the character of a pole of institutional, recreational and educational development.

During this tour, we will visit the Medellin Botanic Garden “Joaquín Antonio Uribe”; where the Orquideorama, designed in 2006 by Felipe Mesa, Alejandro Bernal, Camilo Restrepo and J. Paul Restrepo, is appreciated. Also, we will look the InSito Restaurantby the architect Santiago Caicedo (2008), and the Outdoor Theater and Carboneros square (coalmen’s square) designed by Emerson Marín (2008). The intervention in its urban perimeter replaces a “blind wall” that surrounded the Botanical Garden, by a perimeter ravine that integrated it to its surroundings. Around the Botanic Garden, we will find the Explora Park, a interactive center for the dissemination of science and technology, designed by the architect Alejandro Echeverry (2008); the Municipal Planetarium “Jesús Emilio Martínez González” designed by the architect Marco Aurelio Baquero; the Wishes’ Park – Music’s House by  Felipe Uribe (2003); the North Park (amusement park); the Old Train Station; the Ruta N Complex – Center of Innovation and Business of Medellín, designed by the architect Alejandro Echeverry (2011); and the Antioquia University, which is the most important institution of higher education of Antioquia department. Another architectural element is the Moravian Cultural Development Center designed by the architect Rogelio Salmona (2006) and finished by Marco Aurelio Montes (2008), with a clear and simple geometry and symmetric composition, and whose volumetry is defined with pure prisms and complementary to each other.
