VIENNA- WERKBUNDSIEDLUNG AND ALT ERLAA

The “Wiener Werkbundsiedlung”, also created during the era of “Red Vienna”, is a modernist settlement based on the example of the Stuttgart “Weißenhofsiedlung”, designed in 1932 by the proponents of the “Gartenstadtbewegung” (garden city movement) under the leadership of Josef Frank and with the participation of internationally renowned architects such as Gerrit Rietveld, Richard Neutra, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann or Margarethe Schütte-Lihotzky, the inventor of the “Frankfurt kitchen”. It comprises 70 fully planned and furnished houses, which depicted the vision of new living, and in 1932 were described as “the largest building exhibition in Europe”. After extensive renovation measures in recent years, the estate is in very good condition.

Why are the apartment blocks in Vienna’s Alt Erlaa district still convincing after more than 40 years? The residential park, home to more than 10.000 people, was designed by Arch. Harry Glück, and built in the 1970s. It evolved from a highly criticised property to a highly praised architectural hit.  It was criticised that the residential park was a “housing machine for an anonymous mass”, but the residents defended their homes steadfastly. Highest living comfort, green terraces, sauna and swimming pool on the roof, shopping park and community with the neighbours with the greatest possible privacy are basic parameters that contribute significantly to a level of satisfaction beyond 90%.
