The ADUnB Cultural Center – Association of Teachers of the University of Brasilia – was the result of a request for proposals for professors of the FAU / UnB and other architects who worked on the campus in 1999. The project was extensive and required that the proposal be will execute in multiple stages. In 2003, there was interest in building the front part of the building that houses the administration. It did not include the restaurant, the auditorium and other areas. The redesign project included a cafeteria and other adjacent facilities to give a “final look”. The building is located in the most visible place on campus, next to L-3 North Avenue. The site is of historical importance for the foundation of the UnB, surrounded by the faculty of the Department of Education, the former office of the president of the university and the project of the auditorium Dois Candangos of Alcides da Rocha Miranda. This project also adjoins a building of João Filgueiras Lima, Lelé.
The white walls of the ADUnB Cultural Center refer to the neighboring buildings. In addition, the project refers to the roots of UnB, such as the Oscar Niemeyer buildings for general services, which were white with concrete beams on the ceilings. The sole of the breeze, facing east, is aluminum with electrostatic paint. The project chose not to use the industrialized brise soleil, but to increase the transparency as well as to reinforce the horizontality of the building.
Initially planned in 1999 for 130 seats, or 200 m2, the auditorium built today has 520 seats, with a hall, toilets and two multipurpose spaces totaling 1460 m2.
The set, composed of the administrative area of ADUnB and the auditorium. Constituted by two blocks independent of each other, arranged in parallel, interconnected by a covered pergola, forming a road between them that extends to the center, in the direction of the Dois Candangos Auditorium, sharing with the latter a large parking lot, in addition to another existing in front of the building.
The stage of the auditorium has an open surface of approximately 160 m2 and can be accessed by stairs or ramps. Two private toilets for the disabled are located at the back of the stage. The auditorium has a translation and projection booth. Twenty rows of chairs, model Fox 70-F, in wood and fabric. The first seven rows of chairs are placed on a horizontal floor, which allows the chairs to be removed either for the placement of tables or even for an orchestra during presentations in which the stage area can not be diminished. A large warehouse was created under the highest rows of chairs for the storage of chairs and various equipment.
The acoustic design was developed by a specialized company to guarantee the quality of the sound inside the auditorium.
The lobby has two adjacent spaces of approximately 170 m2 each, useful for social gatherings, exhibitions, conferences and presentations. The outer banks of the lobby are enhanced by gardening and overlook the Dois Candangos Auditorium. The multipurpose space can host bands and orchestras that allow presentations to the open space.
The landscape project, in progress, must integrate and harmonize open spaces and adjacent areas.
