Project Description

HAMBURG

A new urban center

Hamburg forms a city-state of Germany surrounded by canals and rivers. Due to World War II, the city was destroyed by the bombings of the British RAF and the USAAF, which led to its reconstruction, which was affected a few years later by an increase of the river Elbe that flooded a fifth of the city.

Hamburg presents different architectural styles with few skyscrapers (as the tallest building in the city is the old Nikolaikirche). In 2015 different international architects like Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano participated in the great development of the urban center that gave way to the Hafen City neighborhood. Other firms such as Herzog and de Meuron have also contributed to the development of the city with the Elbphilharmonie, leaving a rich heritage of contemporary architecture.

Another important project is the IBA (International Building Exhibition) area which has changed the face of the Elbe Islands and Harburg Upriver Port with different projects focused on innovative house building, urban development, public space, international urban society, education and energy projects.
