DESCRIPTION – San Sebastián: Conflict between nature and artifice

A committed city with a predominance presence of nature creates an architecture that historically speaks about the continuous tension between artifice and geography.

This tension is manifested throughout its recent history, first in the peculiar reinterpretation of Modernism, filtered through the stylistic of the vernacular architecture, producing a “international/ local” style, characteristic of the expansion of the city in the first half of the twentieth century. Secondly and in a more evident way, in those human interventions in places where nature dominates and often continues to dominate the artifice.

It is this conflict that defines the city to the present day. Not even contemporary architecture is able to get rid of this commitment and allows to “deform” itself in the search for a possible and harmonious relationship with the waves, the winds, the mountains belonging to the urban interwoven.
